Advent

Dear People of St John’s

The giant Easter Candle now stands in its prominent place by the altar in the sanctuary of our church reminding us of great Christian claim that “Christ is the light of the world”.

That candle, lit in the spectacular service on Holy Saturday night which began our Easter celebrations, was carried into the darkened cavern of the church, as a symbol of the light of Christ entering into and lighting up all the dark places of our world.

And as we all lit our small candles from the Easter Candle, we were taking our light from the light of Christ.  Easter is the time when we also re-new our Baptismal promises, and so we determine to live our lives – every action or thought – in the light of Jesus Christ.

Easter is the climax of the Christian year; but for those who desire to follow Christ and his teachings throughout the year, every Sunday is in fact a “little Easter” – a reminder to us of Christ’s victory on Easter Day.  And that victory – of life over death, of light over darkness, of goodness over evil – is the faith by which we seek to live every day of our lives.   That’s what makes the Church a holy people, a community living the resurrection day by day.

May God grant you his light, his peace and his joy this Easter
and every day of your life I

                                                                         Fr John
