St John's Choir

Choir

St John's is proud of its musical tradition, which has made a central contribution to the worship of the parish since its founding. The Director of Music is responsible for a committed choir of 20 or so adults (full SATB complement) plus a treble section of boys and girls aged 7 to 18. The choir is affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music, follows its training programme and attends courses and regional events.

New recruits are always welcome; at present we are searching for a new tenor. Boys and girls aged between 7 and 10 need no prior musical experience other than a willingness to sing, since full training is given; adult singers should be able to read music.

Choir members are required, wherever possible, to attend one evening rehearsal a week (currently Thursdays) and the 10.00 am Sunday Eucharist.  We sing a wide range of anthems—everything from plainsong to contemporary composers—and aim for excellence in all we do. Topics such as tone,

blend, intonation, balance, interpretation and style are all addressed during the course of rehearsals, and the hard work is always fuelled by plenty of humour. We understand that no-one is likely to be able to achieve 100 per cent attendance, but welcome such commitment as you can offer.  You provide the voice and the enthusiasm; we provide professional training, a warm rehearsal room, smart new robes, all books and music, and the satisfaction of knowing that your contribution to the worship at St John's is both appreciated and highly valued by our congregation.

The Director of Music is assisted by a team of professional organists and deputies, who, working with the Choir Secretary and Fr John Cullen, between them

·        provide accompaniment for all sung services Choir

·        plan the music for the 10.00 am Sunday Eucharist

·        plan music for all occasional and special services

·        run a training programme for the junior choristers

·        co-ordinate choir social events

·        advise on suitable music for weddings and funerals
