Dear People of St John’s

Haiti – where was God?
As I write this, more statistics on an almost unimaginable scale, are coming in of deaths and injuries resulting from the earthquake that has devastated the Caribbean republic of Haiti in the past few days.  As images of the disaster have appeared on our TV screens and newspapers, people are inevitably asking: Where was God in all this?  And other questions have followed: If God is supposed to be ‘all merciful’ and ‘all powerful’, how could he allow such horrific suffering to happen to so many thousands of people, ‘innocent’ children among them?

Thinking about being Confirmed?

If you are an adult who is thinking about being Confirmed, if you are a parent thinking about Confirmation for one of your family, or if you are one of our young people who has been thinking about being Confirmed, then this note is for YOU!.

The Sacrament of Confirmation follows up and ‘completes’ our Baptism and makes us a full participating member of the Anglican Church (= the Church of England).

Confirmation is the special service (= Sacrament) when the Bishop lays his hands on the head of each candidate and prays for us to receive the Holy Spirit of God. This is our “Commissioning” or “sending out” as fully equipped members of the Church (= the ‘Body of Christ), to witness to our Christian faith in the world.  When we are Confirmed, we then are admitted to receive Holy Communion, to receive from God the strength of the body and blood of Christ, to be “other Christs” in our daily lives.

Confirmation preparation begins soon. There will be one group for adults and another for children.  Application forms for preparation sessions will be available at the back of church.
Please take a form and return it to the Vicarage as soon as possible.
